Where Are They Now? Past UDC Scholarship Recipients

Elias Carson

What was your major?
My major at the University of the District of Columbia was Business Administration with a focus in Finance.

When did you graduate?
I graduated May 11th, 2024.

What did you enjoy most about studying at UDC’s School of Business and Public Administration?
The aspect I enjoyed the most while studying at UDC SBPA was the chance to engage in conversations with and learn from my professors and peers, especially on topics related to economics, capital markets, and security analysis. There aren’t many people in my life (or in general) willing to have an in-depth conversation on such topics, so I really enjoyed having these discussions and learning more about how others view the world of capital markets. Learning more about financial markets initially led me to pursue a degree, so learning from such knowledgeable and credible professionals is certainly another highlight for me.

Where are you working now?
I will start working with J.P Morgan Chase.

Please describe your current role. What are your main responsibilities?
I will be a part of Chase’s 2-year Leadership Development Program, designed to develop future leaders by providing exposure to various business units and functions within Chase. This program includes three eight-month rotations across different businesses, including Auto, Business Banking, Card, Chase Commerce Solutions, Chase Wealth Management, Consumer and Mortgage, and Marketing & Communications. My main responsibilities will revolve around strategic project work, data analysis, and business development. I will also be responsible for engaging in various professional and leadership development training.

What is the most rewarding/interesting aspect of your work?
The most interesting aspects of my work include the opportunity to directly influence the firm’s strategy and operations, the robust skill development and networking opportunities, and the global exposure offered at a multinational firm like Chase. Additionally, the dynamic and fast-paced environment within the financial industry provides constant challenges that keep the work engaging and rewarding.

What are your future career goals?
My long-term career goals involve becoming an Investment Principal, GP or MD, within a private
equity/credit or venture capital firm.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to your student self?
Knowing what I know now, I would advise my student self to seek opportunities that provide no growth in the comfort zone and no comfort in the growth zone. Embrace academic challenges, apply for more internship and fellowship opportunities, and be more outgoing and engaging with your peers.

How can SFA and its member companies help you get to the next level?
With plans to transition to the asset management field, the SFA and its members can help me advance by providing a mentor with experience in asset management, facilitating introductions to key professionals in the field, and granting me access to SFA conferences, webinars, and networking events.

Are there any professional milestones you would like to share with us?

One significant milestone I am proud to share is my participation in the Milken Institute’s HBCU Strategic Initiative Fellowship earlier this year. The mission of the Milken Fellowship is to empower students from HBCUs by providing exceptional opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and networking. As part of the fellowship, I completed multiple educational courses facilitated by ViableEdu and Training the Street, covering essential topics and skills relevant to the asset management industry. A highlight of the fellowship was attending several prestigious conferences, including ATLSLA 2024, the IMF WBG 2024 Spring Meetings, and the Milken Global Conference. Additionally, I had the incredible opportunity to speak with Michael Milken. This experience was invaluable in deepening my understanding of the asset management industry and expanding my professional network in preparation for the future.

When will you graduate?
I will graduate in May 2025.

What did you enjoy most about studying at UDC’s School of Business and Public Administration?
The incredible support and understanding of the professors were evident whenever I needed assistance with assignments or sought a letter of recommendation. The faculty was always eager and willing to help. Their approachability and readiness to support students made a significant difference in my academic journey. Additionally, I loved how the School of Business consistently communicated various opportunities to students. Whether it was about scholarships, programs, internships, or other professional development options, the school ensured that we were well-informed and prepared. This proactive approach helped me gain valuable experience and insights before entering the professional world.

Where are you working now?
I am working at Deloitte.

Please describe your current role. What are your main responsibilities?
I am an Audit & Assurance intern. I’m currently on a client engagement team, and we are in the interim audit phase. My senior is my point of contact and updates me daily with tasks. My main responsibilities are completing audit work papers and maintaining accurate records, assisting with internal controls and risk assessment, documentation for interim status calls, fraud discussion calls and other meetings, mapping accounts, and booking space in the office for my team

What is the most rewarding/interesting aspect of your work?
I would say the most rewarding thing is the opportunity to explore and determine which industry I am most passionate about. My skills are developing each day; I’m learning new things and adapting to unfamiliar tasks. I get to build relationships with the professionals I work with and my fellow interns.

What are some challenges that you did not foresee?
Lack of proficiency with technology, particularly with Excel functions.

What are your future career goals?
I want to pursue a Master’s in Accountancy (school yet to be determined). After that, I plan to return to Deloitte full-time and grow with the firm.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to your student self?
To seize every opportunity that arises, actively seek out and apply for scholarships, fellowships, and leadership programs to gain as much experience as possible. It’s crucial to invest in yourself and your education, as these are the foundations for future success. Another thing to remember is to enjoy the journey, as every experience contributes to building your character and shaping who you are. Embrace the challenges and triumphs alike, as they all play a significant role in your personal and professional growth.

How can SFA and its member companies help you get to the next level?
Initiating a program dedicated to investing in the education of students pursuing their master’s degrees would provide crucial financial support and resources needed for advanced studies. Additionally, creating networking opportunities to connect with influential professionals, especially CPAs, would be incredibly beneficial. As I look forward to taking the exam soon, guidance and mentorship from experienced CPAs would offer valuable insights and support
